My research on banking and market discipline

My research in this area explores the concept of market discipline within various banking systems, primarily focusing on Mexican banks, Russia, but also referencing Kyrgyz and Central American contexts. The research investigates how different market participants—borrowers, subordinated debt holders, and other banks (peers)—can influence banks' risk-taking behavior through price-based, quantity-based, and maturity-based mechanisms. Several papers utilize dynamic panel models with a SYS GMM estimator and examine bank fundamentals (CAMEL indicators) such as capital ratios, loan losses, and liquidity to assess bank quality and its relationship to market discipline. While evidence for borrower discipline is found in Mexico and Kyrgyzstan (particularly the refinancing and certification motives), the studies generally indicate a weak or absent market discipline in Mexican interbank and subordinated debt markets, possibly due to beliefs in implicit government intervention like "too-big-to-fail" policies.
